MICRO-ALGAE - SOURCE OF NATURE
Life on earth started billions of years ago as a result of the development of micro-algae. These powerful microscopic small water plants provide oxygen production on earth and are one of the richest natural sources with a high nutritional and ecological value. Because of their natural origin and nutritious composition, micro-algae are an excellent high grade source of food for humans, animals and plants.
The specific micro-algae of AIN contain all requirements life needs and therefore distinguish themselves from other applications.
Although 80,000 species have been identified, their market potential is hardly used. At present the diversity in offered algae on the world market is very limited. Only two algae species, Spirulina and Chlorella, are permitted in legislation for food applications.
AIN offers a unique algae and continually works on cultivation of additional species with specific functional properties in order to better serve the needs of its customers.
MICRO-ALGAE COMPOSITION
The value of the micro-algae of AIN is expressed by their composition:
- high in protein with all the essential amino-acids
- essential vitamins
- carbohydrates
- plant growth regulators (phyto-hormones)
- pigments (like carotene, antioxidants)
- minerals & trace-elements
- poly-unsaturated fatty acids.

ALGAE INNOVATIONS NETHERLANDS BV
Algae Innovations Netherlands BV (AIN) is a company specialized in aquatic biotechnology.
The company initiators have at their disposal long standing expertise and scientific and practical experience in the field of micro-algae and technology. Based on their fundamental knowledge and practical skills, unique and advanced biotechnological systems has been developed for the large-scale and ecologically balanced cultivation of micro-algae. The first commercial production location of micro-algae in the Netherlands, including research and development facilities, is situated in Flevoland.
Nowadays AIN has different distinctive production facilities and the company has an active research & development policy in order to realize new technology and sustainable products.
THE COMPANY mission is twofold:
large scale production, supply and application of micro-algae in food and non-food products
development and supply of knowledge and technology for new (inter)national business opportunities based on micro-algae.
MANAGEMENT BACKGROUND
The management team is complementary and highly experienced. In addition to the fundamental knowledge of micro-algae & technology they have long standing expertise in the areas of;
- biotechnology / microbiology
- food (Unilever / Exter BV)
- agricultural sector and greenhouse horticulture
- research & development
- marketing & sales
- finance and projectmanagement
- new business development
In today’s ever growing world, the management is devoted to develop sustainable and natural applications based on micro-algae.
SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION
The micro-algae products of AIN are the result of an efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly method of production. Besides production micro algal technology of AIN is an excellent option for the fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2), the production of oxygen and a range of renewable bio products. Micro-algae cultivation attains several fold higher areal productivity compared to terrestrial crops. Furthermore the cultivation of algal biomass is sustainable and environmentally friendly because no pesticides or herbicides are used and there is no loss of minerals by draining-off to the environment.

MICRO-ALGAE - BRIDGE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND BUSINESS
AIN has a historical and lasting relationship with the University of Amsterdam. Micro-algae of AIN are tested by this university research center of science, among other in the field of plant physiology and microbiology. The cooperation between science and business resulted in several scientific and practical research reports in which the positive effect and functionality of AIN micro-algae on plant growth have been proven.
COSMETICS / TOILETRIES
In general it is known that pharmaceutical preparations containing micro-algae as an active ingredient accelerates the cicatrisation of wounds. Treatment is effected with creams, ointments, solutions and suspensions. Pharmaceutical reports show that micro-algae promote skin metabolism and prevent keratinisation. The stimulating effect of micro-algae on granulation and epithelium formation was attributed to the pigments, vitamins and fatty acids. The micro-algae of AIN contain substantial amounts of these components. Several applications have been developed in basic formulations including skin oil, creams, soaps and toiletries products.
Compared to seaweed, that is widely used as basic component for cosmetic products, the micro-algae of AIN are much richer and of higher quality than seaweed (protein content seaweed 8 %, micro-algae 40%).
FOOD
As a pure, natural product with high nutritional value of its components the micro-algae of AIN can be applied as an ingredient or as a main component throughout the food processing industry. The well balanced spectrum of a variety of components, like amino acids and fatty acids, makes it a valuable product in many food applications. Algal powder can be used as ingredient and supplement in health food recipes and products.

GREEN ROOFS
In cooperation with JongKind BV, a high qualified (inter)national supplier of substrates for horticulture, a unique Urban Fertiliser has been developed for the nutrition of green roofs. Urban Fertiliser is based on specific micro-algae of AIN. The long standing positive effect and functionality of this product on the growth of sedum roof plants has been proven. Especially in combination with the URBAN SEDUM TRAYS the product is an important component in the maintenance and conditioning of sedums and green roofs.
The use of this innovative product fits well with the current global transition in the pursuit of sustainable applications.

HORTICULTURE AGRICULTURE
MICRO-ALGAE – HORTICULTURE - AGRICULTURE
Nowadays the use of sustainable products of natural origin has a rapidly growing interest of the horticulture and agriculture. This phenomenon is also stimulated by the reduction of the use of toxicological chemical components.
During many years of research the micro-algae of AIN are investigated and tested on a variety of plants by specialized plant growth research center, scientific institutes and commercial growers. The practical experience proved that substrates and soil enriched with micro-algae of AIN foster plant growth and development throughout the life cycle. These micro-algae contain all requirements plant life needs and therefore distinguish themselves from other plant product applications.
AQUAPHYTO is a natural liquid substance composed of unique and specific selected micro-algae, originated from a controlled, sustainable and natural method of production. Plants prosper on a good environment and a healthy nutrition. Therefore, the use of AQUAPHYTO does not only stimulate growth performance of plants but also offer resistance to plant diseases. The addition of AQUAPHYTO to soil (substrates) initiates and enhances the activity of beneficial soil microorganisms and stimulates soil-plant-environment interactions.
AQUAPHYTO can also be used as an ingredient in liquid (inorganic /organic) fertilizer formulations, in which it enhances the efficiency.

MICRO-ALGAE - CONNECTING PEOPLE
The knowledge mile community improves the quality of life in the city, by connecting tomorrow’s knowledge, creativity en technology with metropolitan issues of today. The knowledge mile course of the Amstelstation to the Nieuwmarkt. This area is struggling with traffic pressure, peak load with rainwater, air pollution (Particulate Matter) and lack of social cohesion. The challenges are special related to health issues as defined by the Amsterdam Economic Board.
Micro-algae contribute indirectly to a reduction of particulate matter and this phenomenon resulted in cooperation with the Knowledge Mile Community.
On the roof of the Benno Premsela house, situated in the Wibautstraat of Amsterdam, a Pilot Plant with URBAN SEDUM TRAYS is realized for the determination of particulate matter (PM) originated from the air. During a period of one year the removal and fixation of particulate matter by the sedum trays shall be investigated. The objective of the Pilot Plant is to obtain a reliable and accurate determination of the functionality of URBAN SEDUM TRAYS to the removal of particulate matter.
The project is an initiative of De Gezonde Stad, de Hoge School van Amsterdam (Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries), de Knowledge Mile Community, de Universiteit van Amsterdam (Amsterdam Green Campus), Jongkind BV en Algae Innovations Netherlands.
